ECerS Past President, Pavol Sajgalik, appointed as President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences

In June 2017 Slovak President Andrej Kiska has officially appointed Professor Pavol Šajgalik as President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Almost four fifths of the SAS Assembly elected him to the function on April 4, 2017.

"The most important thing we have before us is to apply the conclusions of the international accreditation of SAS institutes. This step should lead to action plans for our further development. We should then proceed to an internal program in which SAS itself would be able to identify top teams and individuals on the basis of objective rules who are so far advanced that we could actually build on them and achieve more prominence in the European Research Area ", says Pavol Šajgalik.

In the coming weeks approval the law on public research institutions in the parliament is expected. Thanks to this, individual institutions can be transformed into modern scientific workplaces. The SAS President also emphasized the greater need to get closer to the young generation, especially in the post-factual period which in many cases distorts world views.

"We need to get in touch with the demands of society, of people living in Slovakia so they also feel that SAS not only addresses things that are marginal and remote for them, although they are important to us, but they also profit directly from SAS activities, "added Pavol Šajgalík.

Pavol Šajgalík graduated from the Natural Sciences Department of the Comenius University Bratislava and is a recognized expert in material research and construction ceramics. He has worked his entire professional life at SAS, and has completed numerous foreign research placements. He is a member of prestigious scientific societies around the world and has won many awards and commendations. The four-year term of office of the “new old” SAS president will begin on June 6, 2017.
