The European Ceramic Society
Research Fellow in Advanced Ceramics Discovery and Processing (Fixed term)
The University of Nottingham seeks applications for a Research Fellow in Advanced Ceramics for Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs).
The researcher will be joining the Coatings and Surface Engineering team in the Faculty of Engineering to work with other Research Fellows and PhD researchers engaged on complimentary topics. Professor Tanvir Hussain was awarded a five-year fellowship - funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) - to find new materials, modelling and processing techniques that will overhaul the design and manufacture of advanced ceramic materials for the next-generation of air and space travel- details here.
A PhD or Postdoctoral experience in ceramic is required for this position. Experience in any combination of the following is desirable: new composition development, high throughput rigs, thermodynamics/kinetics modelling, advanced characterisation and high temperature testing of ceramic. Silicate based environmental barrier coatings are of particular interest in this project.
You will be developing new ceramic compositions through an innovative materials discovery apparatus (MDA), characterise those using advanced electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, and carry out mechanical and environmental tests. The University has installed the UK’s only high power, high-efficiency axial injection Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS). SPS will be one of the primary processing techniques in this research.
The proposed research is leading-edge, and expected to lead to high-quality publications and industrial applications, making this an ideal training opportunity for an academic career. The researcher will join a vibrant, supportive world-class research team working with 15 other industrial partners.
This is a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed-term position for 3 years. Arrangements for job share would be considered.
