04/24 - Webinar

The DGM (German Society for Materials Science) and SFS (International Alliance of Societies for a Sustainable Future) are organising a Webinar on 24th April at 5 PM CEST, presented by Christian Berg from TU CLausthal.

Despite several decades of public discourse on sustainability humanity is certainly not on a sustainable path yet. Humanity is exceeding several planetary boundaries. At the same time, there is an increasing polarization in many societies. While some people get increasingly worried about the climate crisis and the deterioration of our ecosystems, others blatantly deny that there is any problem at all. The lecture will explore the reasons for this situation. It will argue that the transition towards a more sustainable society is much more complex than often assumed and that this complexity needs to be understood  first in order to effectively address the corresponding challenges. This systemic view on the “barriers to sustainability” needs to be complemented, however, by an actors view: what can be done to support actors of different kind (individuals, corporations, NGOs, states, …) in their striving for sustainability? The lecture will present a framework for principles for sustainable action and discuss a few examples.

Why Crystal Structure Matters: Decoding the Performance of Calcium Phosphate Biomaterials

In the world of calcium phosphate biomaterials, crystal structure is often the silent driver behind a material’s success—or failure. Whether we are developing bone graft substitutes or studying bioceramic interactions at the tissue interface, understanding the underlying crystal lattice isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
