Debriefing of the yCAM 2020 Conference by Eren Özmen, co-organizer

The 4th edition of the young Ceramists Additive Manufacturing Forum (yCAM) was carried out virtually in the last week of October 2020, following the ECerS School on additive manufacturing of ceramic materials.

In this letter, I would like to express my personal experience gained during the preparation of the yCAM 2020 as a member of the local organizing team.

In the first place, the yCAM 2020 journey started for us around late September 2019. The initial purpose was to organize it physically in April 2020 in Toulouse with the collaboration of JECS Trust and ECerS. We put in a big effort and worked in detail to bring the yCAM to the next level with Andrea Zocca, Giorgia Franchin, and David Karl from the main organizing committee, and Véronique Huart from ECerS. However, the unclear situation in the world pushed us to postpone it to October 2020 at first, and then finally turn it into a virtual one.

Organizing a virtual conference from scratch was quite challenging in terms of adapting every single point (for example, sessions, timing, posters, etc.) to the digital world. However, our main consideration was to catch the networking vibe of yCAM like before in previous formats. With the support of ECerS and JECS Trust, it was possible to bring everyone together by using the interactive platform called Gather.town. Added to this, we received a record number of registrations as a result of the low registration fee, which was also possible with the support from JECS Trust. I believe that yCAM 2020 successfully engaged people from different levels of the academy and industry by providing them a platform to discuss various critical scientific points and present the latest developments in their studies.

I want to thank all the participants one more time for making the yCAM 2020 a unique and unforgettable experience with their scientific contribution. Dedicatedly, to all the chairpersons of seven different sessions, those tens of presenters of high-quality presentations and posters, thank you, again, for making the process go smoothly. And finally, thanks a lot to the members of ECerS and JECS Trust for your endless support and this great opportunity.

For your information, yCAM 2021 will be held in Toulouse as well, hopefully in person. Unfortunately, we cannot give clear dates at the moment. However, the members of the local organizing committee; David Grossin, Guillaume Gentils, Alejandro Monton, Pedro Navarrete, and Giovanni Bruno, will be always there for your questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I wish you all a happy and healthy 2021, hope to see you in Toulouse!
