Debriefing of the yCAM 2020 Conference by Farid Salari, participant for the first time

The young ceramists additive manufacturing forum, held on 28-30 October 2020, was a unique platform not only for young researchers in this field to find professional connections but also as a society to establish friendships among people who pursue their passion in a scientific environment.

yCAM main event used the benefit of the Gather Town platform to simulate a real conference atmosphere. Here, I have to admit that organizers were successful in this because the executive committee put a lot of effort to create a friendly environment. Despite the covid pandemic, we had a great experience.

The event started with a two-day DOC-3D printing school in advance including top notch speeches from pioneers in the realm of ceramic additive manufacturing. The conference was scheduled in seven different sessions, and my presentation was included in the 3D printing powder based (binder jetting) session.  In the poster section right before my presentation time, there came an opportunity to meet Dr. Andrea Zocca and Dr. Elsayed on gather town and we talked about the binder jet printing of cementitious materials. This conversation continued to the last virtual coffee break and we are still in contact to turn this opportunity into a fruitful collaboration.

Developing binder jetting technology from a manufacturing perspective formed the structure of my speech. The influence of processing factors on the flexural strength of printed products was presented to the audiences, through statistical analysis and microstructural characterizations. The introduced model in our study can assist the operator in selecting a combination of binder jetting process inputs for pre-determined final material performance.

In the days that followed, I enjoyed various presentations and made new friends. This event was a very delightful experience for me, and I shared a summary of it with you. Also, I would like to suggest to all young researchers working on ceramics and beyond to join this network.
