I am Salim Brahimi, PhD student in Ceramic Engineering at the Department of Materials Engineering of M'Hamed Bougara University (Algeria). My general research focus is based on the methods of fabrication of ceramic materials for biomedical applications. My thesis project involves the preparation of hydroxyapatite and other calcium phosphates from biogenic (natural) materials that are available in large quantities. Two years ago, I received a scholarship for the optimization of a new biocomposite for bone regeneration, where I collaborated with the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology (Zagreb, Croatia) under the supervision of Professor Hrvoje Ivanković. Additionally, a part of my research interests under the supervision of my thesis advisor Professor Khaled Boumchedda is also focused on the development of green functional ceramics from clay minerals. Throughout my PhD, I had the chance to present my research at international conferences and workshops, which I found personally a great opportunity to expand my international network, sharpen my knowledge and learn about the latest innovations and insights in my field of expertise.

During my stay at the University of Zagreb, I met such great people where I had the chance to know the YCN community and discovered their webinars and online activities, which I found fascinating along the way, and I even received a scholarship to attend the ACerS 2021 Winter Workshop thanks to them. I’m now reaching the end of my PhD journey, it’s been a long and winding road, but I’ve reached the final hurdle. Regardless, I’ll look back on my PhD journey as a positive one. I have improved myself in many ways, met some amazing people, and travelled to some incredible places. I will also be able to address myself as Dr if I so please.

Ultimately, I address to anyone nearing the end – hang in there. It may not seem like it right now, but it will all be worth it.

Sincerely,

Salim Brahimi
