Research topics :
- Focused on Zirconia Dental Implants solutions based on conceptualisation, design, fabrication, biological and mechanical properties, addressing biomechanism analysis, Numerical simulations, stereolithography technique, Laser texturisation, Modified bioactive glasses and phytotherapeutics extraction and characterisation.
Contact information:
Joana Mesquita-Guimarães
- Exploiting sol–gel bioactive glasses to produce: i) nanometric organic/inorganic hybrids via electrospinning and well-defined micrometric architectures via 3D electrohydrodynamic printing, bioreactors to provide cyclic bending stimulation and hydrostatic pressure for bone scaffolds.
Contact information:
Nathalie Barroca
- Electrochemical conversion of intermittent renewable energies into chemical products, such as hydrogen or synthetic hydrocarbons, their storage and their later reconversion to electricity in fuel cells. Work encompasses the design of devices and materials for batteries, solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC), solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), hydrogen separation membranes and hydrogen storage. Available infrastructure permits, quantification of H2 storage materials by Sievert method, proton/oxide-ion transference number determination, a.c. impedance as a function of pO2, pH2O and temperature, fuel cell/electrolyser/battery testing, faradaic efficiency, permeation and in-situ analysis of gas phase products by gas chromatography.

Exceptional facilities :
As a result of the investments conducted by TEMA over its 20 years of existence, the infrastructure TEMA offers a wide range of highly specialized and dedicated equipment. The surface analysis system by Multi technique XPS/UPS and AES highlights the uniqueness of the services available to the scientific community, being unique in Portugal, regarding the vacuum environment conditions at the 2E-10 mbar level. The Infrastructure TEMA is equipped with a set of mechanical samples’ tests, whose combination can be considered as unique in Portugal. Ranging from high precision machinery of 1E-6 N, e.g., universal trials machine with a measuring range of 100 N, equipment specialized in measuring biological tissues, obtained by means of in vitro cultures, to machines of 1000 kN that allows for testing advanced high strength steel alloys. It, therefore, becomes possible, in a unique open access infrastructure, to obtain results and measurements of mechanical tests in several scales, from nano to macro.

Platinum Internship Programme at CGCRI!
As a part of the platinum jubilee celebration, CSIR-CGCRI is proud to announce the ‘PLATINUM Internship Award’ to invite young undergraduates to gain from the knowledge and experience of accomplished scientists by working at CSIR-CGCRI and to inspire them to pursue S&T as a career. This is meant to be a preparatory phase for young interns to imbibe the spirit of inquiry and learn the tools and techniques of research during their stay at CSIR-CGCRI.
