CYSC - Report from Danica Piper, member of the organizing committee

YCN Newsletter 11 - December 2021

The 14th edition of ECerS Conference for Young Scientists (CYSC) in Ceramics was held on October 20-3 in Novi Sad. Despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic, the organizing team consisting of the Department of Materials Engineering of the Faculty of Technology Novi Sad and The European Ceramic Society (ECerS) with Young Ceramists Network (YCN) managed to make the event live! I’m PhD student of Materials Engineering at the Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my experience as a member of the organizing committee.

CYSC is traditionally held every two years (since 1998) and the main goal is to promote the work of young scientists, where they have opportunity to gain international contacts with people from different countries and institutions through the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of ceramics. This year, the gathering hosted 131 participants from 24 countries, of which 9 were invited speakers. Parallel with the conference, the ECerS 2021 Students Speech Contest was held, in which 19 students, previously selected by their country's ceramic society, presented their works. In addition to the standard organization, which includes accommodation and transportation of participants, as well organization of lectures and students’ sessions, it was necessary to provide conditions for the implementation of epidemiological measures, which was certainly a challenge taking into account the number of participants. On this occasion, I would like to thank all the participants for their discipline, understanding and empathy, bearing in mind the conditions of the meeting. In addition to live participation, the possibility of online participation was provided for competitors who were not able to come to Serbia due to the mentioned situation, which meant additional organizational efforts in the form of equipment and matching the timing with the live conference.

It was not an easy task before us, but we successfully answered it. A very dynamic, professional and in the end cheerful atmosphere was held during the conference. We ended the successful conference and competition with Gala dinner and the announcement of the winner of the competition.

The next CYSC is scheduled for October 2023 in Novi Sad. We are open for all questions and look forward to meet you all. We wish you happy holidays, a healthy and happy 2022 and hope to see you in Novi Sad!
