YCN Newsletter 24 - Goodbye letter from Nicolas Somers
Dear YCN community, dear colleagues, dear friends,
First of all, I would like to express my deepest thanks to all young (and less young) scientists who constantly give their time and energy for the Ceramic Community and improve the networking between us...
After 4 years in the Young Ceramists Network Committee, it is time for me to move on and let Joanna Tańska take over with all her motivation and ideas. It is difficult to express with words all the things I experienced during these 4 years. If I need to summarize everything in one word it would be this one: people. I have met so many interesting and nice people through my work in the YCN. Lots of these people became colleagues and friends that I will keep all my life, I am sure of that.
More than a network, the YCN is a social adventure. Everything the YCN is doing is for the people, participants at conferences/workshops and the contributors to newsletters, photo contest and event organizations. Our best motivation is to see smiles and satisfaction on the faces of young scientists when we organize an activity. I always felt so grateful for those moments when you can see the beginning of new collaborations and/or friendships.
With the YCN, we have a unique opportunity to be part of a huge international network supported by a renowned scientific society. Being involved in the YCN helped to disconnect sometimes from the lab work and discover new skills like event planning, chairing of conferences, reviewing and editing articles. By doing such a selfless service for our ceramic community, opportunities arrive naturally with a lot of new possible collaborations or job opportunities. The information shared through the YCN social media can be read around the world and can help to change lives. For example, I had the chance to find my postdoc experience in the US (Georgia Tech, Atlanta) in the YCN LinkedIn group.
I wish the YCN Committee, YCN Representatives and all YCN members the best of luck. I won’t be too far for a drink and to chat with you about the past, present and future.
Thank you again for everything.
Best,
Nicolas

Why Crystal Structure Matters: Decoding the Performance of Calcium Phosphate Biomaterials
In the world of calcium phosphate biomaterials, crystal structure is often the silent driver behind a material’s success—or failure. Whether we are developing bone graft substitutes or studying bioceramic interactions at the tissue interface, understanding the underlying crystal lattice isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
