PhD Opportunity in Additive Manufacturing for Space Applications - University of Padova, Italy

Prof. Giorgia Franchin is looking for a PhD candidate to join the CerAMglass research group at the University of Padova (Italy) within a newly funded PhD project supported by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). 

The project focuses on the development of additive manufacturing materials and technologies for future lunar construction, combining advanced, sustainable materials from In Situ Resource Utilization (IRSU), additive manufacturing (AM), and space exploration.

Who should apply?

  • MSc graduates or students graduating by October 2026
  • Engineering backgrounds are particularly welcome (Materials, Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial Engineering)
  • Curiosity, motivation, and a genuine interest in tackling challenging engineering problems

What you will do:

  • Develop, test and characterize innovative materials and manufacturing processes for space applications
  • Contribute to the design of experimental equipment and research methodologies
  • Work at the interface of materials science, manufacturing, and space engineering

The PhD position will be advertised from 21 July within the PhD Programme in Industrial Engineering – Materials Curriculum at the University of Padova; the selected candidate will start on 1 November. Padua is a university city, highly international, student-friendly, and well-connected to Venice, Milan, and the rest of Europe.
